Cat Fight When Your Cats Don't Get Along

Posted by

Having cats battling eachother in your home is unpleasant and adds to your stress. There are simply steps you can take to try and limit fighting between them.

Introduce the new cat to a safe environment with you and no other cats. Cats can be territorial, let them feel safe in at least one environment.

Once your new cat has adjusted somewhat to that environment, and more importantly to you, slowly introduce it to the other feline members of the household. Always be present.

Try not to allow growling and hissing. If you have to hold one of them, that is ok. Sometimes keeping one on your lap while you are doing something else and just having them be in the same room adjusting to one another can help.

Try and play with them in the same room. Have a string for them to chase around. This takes their focus off of one another and places it on the string. The more accustomed they get to being in the same environment and not caring, the better.

Never allow fights to break out. If you happen to see one cat stalking the other, stop them before an altercation occurs. Be firm, say no, pick them up if you have to, just make sure it does not escalate.

Be careful not to let either monopolize your attention. Make sure your older cats do not feel neglected. If there is tention in the room, pay attention to both animals and try to be reassuring to both.

If possible, introduce a kitten. They will pose less of a threat to the other cats, but that doesn't mean they will all get along.

In the worse case scenario-try to separate out the areas each cat frequents most. Let them each have their own preferred spaces and be wary when one ventures into another's preferred space.

Discourage them from fighting. Have a spray bottle readily available. If a spat breaks out, don't be afraid to use it.
